Broncos Payne Haas Comes Under Fire for Going on the Market

Broncos star Payne Haas will be available on the market and will listen to offers from other clubs. The player has publicly stated that he wants to win a premiership title and there are few clubs better than the Broncos to achieve that. So, his decision to speak to other teams has not been received well.

The Brisbane Broncos prop’s decision means he will only consider signing a new deal with the Broncos after he has listened to offers from other teams. As it stands, Haas, who was reportedly approached by an NFL club too, will probably go to the highest bidder or will ask the Broncos to match or improve the best offer his manager receives.

Haas Wants to Test Market Value

Speaking on NRL 360, Braith Anasta said the Haas “dropped a bombshell on the Broncos,” while Phil Rothfield thought the player wanted to gauge the market and see how much it values him. However, Rothfield said Haas’ decision didn’t fit with what the player and his entourage have been saying in the past.

Gorden Tallis has also questioned the player’s decision to test the market by saying that the Broncos can give Haas the title he covets. The only two other options that could offer that, according to Tallis, were the Penrith Panthers and South Sydney Rabbitohs.

James Hooper singled out the Bulldogs as the club with the strongest interest in Haas, and the team was expected to make a move for Haas “at the right time.” For Hooper, Haas saying that he wanted to win a premiership and then joining Canterbury Bankstown didn’t make sense.

The Broncos Will Likely Match the Best Offer

The NRL 360 panel was also surprised that Haas has quickly forgotten that the Broncos looked after him, especially considering “all the stuff that is written in the paper” about him. Tallis said that Payne started letting his team down “like every 10 games” and he did that quite frequently lately.

Rothfield was quick to point out that almost all the clubs that have expressed interest in Haas were not title contenders, saying that his agent probably wanted to see what money he could fetch for the player and then ask the Broncos to match that.

Haas earns $850,000 in Brisbane. However, considering his importance to the team, Hooper was sure that Brisbane would match any offer Payne’s manager comes back with.
