Are you looking for a complete guide on sports betting?

We have you covered.

In this post we will be taking a deep dive into different types of sports bets and explain how each one works.

Take a look below at the how-to’s for sports betting below.

How to do Margin Betting

AFL margin betting is a simple bet that asks you to pick how much your selected team will win by.

You may see an AFL example like this:

If Richmond was to win by 1-39 points, you would receive a payout of $4.30 for a $1 bet. If they won by more than 40 points you would receive a $24 payout.

Or an NRL example like this:

If the Newcastle Knights were to win by 1-12 points, you would receive a payout of $6 for a $1 bet. If they won by 13 or more points you would receive a $17 payout.

As ever, a larger payout comes with increased difficulty and the associated risk!

How to do Line Betting

Think of it like applying a head start (or handicap) to the team you are choosing to bet on.

An AFL line bet might look something like this:

This means that if you bet on Essendon, they would have to win by more than 17.5 points for you to receive $1.92 payout from a $1 bet.

On the other hand if you bet on Melbourne, they could win by any margin or loose by less than 17.5 points, and you will receive the $1.92 payout from a $1 bet.

An NRL example would look like this:

This means that if you bet on Manly, they would have to win by more than 12.5 points for you to receive $1.88 payout from a $1 bet.

On the other hand if you bet on Cronulla, they could win by any margin or lose by less than 12.5 points, and you will receive the $1.88 payout.

This is intended to make the game equal, giving you a true bet on which team performs better on the day compared to their recent form

How to do Head to Head betting

A head-to-head bet is a simple bet where you choose which of the two teams will win, regardless of the score.

AFL Example: If Carlton (@ $1.95) are playing Collingwood (@ $2.30) and you bet $10 on Collingwood, who win, you would get back $23.

NRL Example: Similarly, if the Sea Eagles (@ $1.95) are playing the Broncos (@ $2.30) and you bet $10 on the Broncos, who win, you would get back $23.

Football (Soccer) Example: If Liverpool (@ $1.95) is playing Manchester United (@ $2.30) and you bet $10 on Manchester United, who prevail, you would receive $23.

How to do Over/Under Betting

Over/Under betting is where you don’t have to pick a certain team to win, just the whether you think the total points of the game will be over or under a predetermined amount.

AFL Example: If Geelong are playing Essendon, the pre-determined OVER/UNDER for the game might be set at 210.5 points (@ $1.90). If you believe the score will be lower than 210.5 then you should bet the UNDER, if the final result is less than 210.5 points and you bet $10 then you will get back $19.

NRL Example: If Wests Tigers are playing the Storm, the pre-determined OVER/UNDER for the game might be set at 32.5 points (@ $1.90). If you believe the score will be higher than 32.5 then you should bet the OVER, if the final result is more than 32.5 points and you bet $10 then you will get back $19.

How to do Live Betting

Live betting allows you to bet on a game that is in progress.

Bet types can vary and your bookmaker will show what AFL, NRL or Soccer betting markets they have at any given time on their website.

Note: According to government regulations, it is important to remember that to place a live bet you must actually call your bookmaker.

Accumulator or Parlay Betting

In sports betting, a parlay is multiple bets placed at the one time, with the “winnings” from each turning into the wager on the next.

The effect is substantial if all of your bets are successful. This type of bet can be used in most sports including AFL, NRL, Horse Racing and Football (Soccer)

Example of a 3 leg parlay:

Starting with a bet of $10

Bet 1 wins at $3.30 = $33

Bet 2 is now placed with $33

Bet 2 wins at $4.80 = $158.40

Bet 3 is now placed with $158.40

Bet 3 wins at $1.90 = $300.96
