The History of Oaks Day

The Oaks has a storied past, originating in 1861 as a Principal Race and evolving over the years into a prestigious Group 1 event dedicated to three-year-old fillies. Initially, the race was 2400 meters long until 1973, when it expanded to 2500 meters. Known over the years as the VRC Oaks and Kennedy Oaks, and the Crown Oaks, it’s found it’s way back home as the Crown Oaks in 2024.

It’s also affectionately known as “Ladies’ Day,” thanks to the famous “Fashions on the Field” tradition, introduced by the Victoria Racing Club in 1962.

Tips for Betting and Winning at the Races

Betting on Oaks Day can be just as exhilarating as the races themselves. A bit of research on the fillies, their jockeys, and trainers can make a difference. If betting is new for you, take a few minutes to get familiar with the terminology and types of bets. Dress Code and Fashion Tips for Oaks Day

Oaks Day is synonymous with style. It’s a chance to go bold yet elegant, with ladies typically donning sophisticated dresses and gentlemen stepping up in suits and ties. But keep the Melbourne weather in mind—those heels might look fantastic but won’t feel as lovely if they’re sinking into wet grass!

Beyond the track, there’s plenty to enjoy: live music, fashion shows, and a variety of pop-up bars await. VIP marquees offer a touch of exclusivity with fine dining, drinks, and a premium view of the racecourse.
