The Tracks History
The first horse racing in Canterbury occurred in 1852 when Cornelius Proud cleared part of his property for use as a racecourse, which residents frequently utilised. After a few years of no race meetings, Frederick Clissold and Thomas Austen Davis conducted a race meeting on land leased by Davis near the existing racecourse in 1871. The site was leased as the headquarters of Canterbury Park Race Club in 1884. On January 19, 1884, a racetrack, 700-person grandstand, and leisure park were built, and the inaugural meeting was held. Davis purchased 53 acres (21 ha) of the leased land for the club in 1886.
A zoo on the property until World War I held species like kangaroos, wallabies, emus, brolgas, curlews, pheasants, and kookaburras.
The Sydney Turf Club (STC) purchased the racecourse in January 1945 and hosted its inaugural meeting there. The STC owned the racecourse until 2011 when the Sydney Turf Club and the Australian Jockey Club united to become the Australian Turf Club. Canterbury Park Racecourse is currently owned and operated by the Australian Turf Club.
