Doomben Races

Doomben Racecourse is an Australian horse racing track located near Brisbane, Queensland. It is located in the Ascot area, 7 kilometres north of Brisbane’s central business district. The Doomben Racecourse is located next to the Eagle Farm Racecourse and can be reached by vehicle, train, or bus. These courses, together with Eagle Farm, are regarded as the two largest racecourses in South East Queensland, and they share irrigation systems and several of Brisbane Racing’s feature events.

The Track

Doomben’s course dimensions comprise a 27-meter-wide race track with a 1715-meter circumference. The track’s front and back straights are 320 metres long with a 2% camber; however, the corners on the circuit are steeper with a 5% camber. Doomben’s entire racing track is covered with Kikuyu turf, and all races are held clockwise, as do most race tracks in Australia.

 

The Tracks History

Doomben racecourse is owned and maintained by the Brisbane Racing Club (BRC), which also owns and maintains the nearby racecourse, Eagle Farm, making the two most significant racecourses in South East Queensland. Since its inception in 2009, the BRC has operated within and between these two courses, following the merger of the Queensland Turf Club (QTC) and the Brisbane Turf Club (BTC). Before the merger, the QTC had been based at Eagle Farm Racecourse since its inception in August 1865, while the BTC had been based entirely at Doomben Racecourse. Although the BTC has held race meetings at Doomben since the circuit’s inception and initial race in 1933, the BTC was formally known as the Brisbane Amateur Turf Club (BATC), the club under which the Doomben course was officially launched. This name change from BATC to BTC occurred in 1997 and lasted until the 2009 merger.

The notion for this merger and the possibility of closing the Doomben course entirely had been brewing since the early 2000s. After Queensland Racing stated that the individual clubs of the BTC and QTC could not continue operating separately, firm motions in favour of the merger surfaced in 2007. This was due to increased competition between the two clubs, resulting in a division of attendees and lowering overall revenues. The BTC’s loss of almost $1,000,000 in 2008 indicated this rivalry. As a result, this merger became formal in July 2009, and the BRC was founded.

Most Famous Race Held At Doomben

The Doomben 10,000, formerly the Doomben Newmarket Handicap, is the most famous race at Doomben Racecourse. It was first run on the day the circuit opened in 1933. Following the course reopening on June 1, 1946, when the prize was upped to 10,000 pounds after the Pacific War ended and military camps were evacuated from Doomben, the race became known as the Doomben 10,000. Doomben 10,000 was the wealthiest sprint race in Australia at the time; however, the total prize pool for the 2021 race is $1,000,000.

Bus

Take the 301 bus from Adelaide Street in the city to Doomben Racecourse. For complete transportation information and timetables, go to www.translink.com.au.

Train

Take the Doomben line from any CBD railway station or change services at Eagle Junction for the Doomben line to go to the Doomben Racecourse. The racetrack is a five-minute walk from Doomben train station.

Directions To The Track

Doomben Racecourse is situated in the centre of four roads: Raceview Avenue (to the north), Hampden Street (to the south), Southern Cross Way (to the east), and Nudgee Road (to the west), with the venue entrance on Hampden Street.
Located in the northeast part of Brisbane’s Ascot neighbourhood, this racing track is near another race track called Eagle Farm. The two courses are only a half-kilometre apart and are separated by Nudgee Road, which connects Doomben to the east and Eagle Farm to the west.
Because of the former rivalry between the two Racecourses, Nudgee Road has been dubbed the “Gaza Strip” to represent the historical animosity between the two venues.
